Scripture: Genesis 32:24-30
In Genesis 32 Jacob is returning home after fleeing from his brother, Esau, 20 years earlier. What awaits him is unknown. Jacob is fearful of how Esau will receive him. Jacob is anxious, desperate. The night before Jacob confronts his past and his brother he is alone. God himself enters Jacob’s camp and wrestles with Jacob all night.
To this point Jacob has spent his life looking for “blessing.” His idea and understanding of blessing was found in comfort, in provision, in getting what he thought he wanted. As Jacob wrestles with God is realizes his conversations have been one-sided. Genesis 32:26 says, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” To which Jacob responds, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
Dr. David Busic writes, “Those things that matter most in life are not gained without a struggle.” How often do you struggle in prayer? In the wrestling Jacob is actually praying. Do you hold on throughout the night, determined not to let go until God responds? Or do you give up, resign yourself to the fears, anxiety, and unknowns represent?
May you be encouraged to hold on! Keep wrestling…even without words. Do not let go! On Sunday Pastor Brian discussed the “WHY” we pray. Jacob shows us why.
“(Wrestling with God) is holding fast to the character of God in the face of every contradictory emotion or situation” (Busic) and believing in the wrestling we come to know Him more.
Pray and wrestle with God today. Bring God your fears, your anxious thoughts, and the unknowns. Sit with God. Listen. And don’t let go!
